Project Background
In October 2023, we received an inquiry from a small-to-medium-sized recycled paper mill in the Philippines. The mill primarily produces packaging paper from imported waste paper, processing 30 tons of waste paper daily.
Previously, the paper mill used forklifts and manual labor to transport waste paper piles. Three major issues arose: 1. The forklift’s large turning radius obstructed workshop aisles. 2. When manually assisted with handling, waste paper scattered and wasted 8%-10%. 3. A single shift required three workers, resulting in high labor costs.
To improve waste paper handling efficiency, the mill planned to purchase an LD electric single-girder 5 ton overhead crane equipped with an electromagnetic chuck system. The customer considered our product suitable so they filled out an inquiry form online.
Project Challenges
Limited workshop conditions: The factory’s span is 19 meters. The existing steel structure is insufficiently load-bearing, so they need an overhead crane with high load capacity.
High environmental requirements: The workshop humidity reaches 65%-70%, resulting in high levels of paper dust and debris, which can easily cause equipment circuit failures.
Operational barriers: Local workers lack professional lifting equipment operation experience, requiring simplified operation procedures.

The electromagnetic suction cup is designed with an IP65 waterproof rating and covered with a wear-resistant rubber layer to prevent scratches from waste paper.
Enhanced environmental protection: The steel structure is treated with a zinc-aluminum-magnesium alloy coating for rust prevention. Dust covers are installed on the motor and reducer, and the electrical box is sealed.
Operational optimization: A wireless remote control is provided with a simplified button layout (remaining only the up/down/translation functions).

Conclusion
After one month operation of the 5 ton overhead crane, the mill plant manager saw a 40% increase in waste paper transfer efficiency. Waste paper loss by spillage was reduced to less than 2%, saving approximately 10,000 pesos in raw material costs. Equipment failures were less than once per month. And maintenance costs were minimal to require only simple cleaning of the suction cups and cable inspection.
This case study shows the suitability of the single girder 5 ton overhead crane for small and medium-sized paper mills. Its lightweight design and environmentally friendly upgrades allow it to overcome plant limitations. Its simplified operation and high cost-effectiveness meet the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises in developing regions.
